SVG downloads are often packaged inside a ZIP file. Before using the design in a cutting or design application, extract the ZIP so you can work with the actual SVG and any accompanying files.
Quick answer
On Windows, right-click the ZIP and choose Extract All. On a Mac, double-click the ZIP. Then open the new extracted folder and locate the file ending in .svg.
Step 1: Download the ZIP file
Choose a design from the Free SVG library and use the download button on its resource page. Unless you changed your browser settings, the ZIP will normally be placed in your Downloads folder.
Step 2: Extract it on Windows
- Open File Explorer and locate the downloaded ZIP.
- Right-click or press and hold the ZIP file.
- Select Extract All.
- Choose a destination if needed, then follow the extraction prompt.
Microsoft also allows individual items to be dragged from an opened ZIP into another location, but extracting the complete package helps keep related files together.
Step 3: Extract it on a Mac
- Open Finder and locate the downloaded ZIP.
- Double-click the ZIP file.
- Open the extracted item that appears in the same folder.
Safari may automatically expand a ZIP after downloading it. If you see a normal folder but no ZIP, check that folder before downloading the file again.
Step 4: Find the SVG
Open the extracted folder and look for the filename ending in .svg. A computer may show a browser icon for an SVG; that does not turn it into a web page or change the file format. Import or upload the SVG from inside the design application you plan to use.
Troubleshooting
- The SVG opens in a browser: close the preview and use your design application’s import or upload command instead.
- You can only see the ZIP: complete the extraction steps above before looking for the SVG.
- The ZIP will not open on a Mac: check that there is enough free storage space. Apple also notes that a damaged archive may need to be downloaded or created again.
- Safari already removed the ZIP: look for an expanded folder with the same download name.
